How to Compare Prices Across Stores (Without Wasting Hours)
The lowest sticker price isn't always the best deal. Here's a quick method for comparing stores that takes the full cost into account.
Step 1: Identify the exact product
Make sure you're comparing like with like. Note the brand, model number, size, color, and version. Small differences, such as an older model or a regional version, often explain big price gaps.
Step 2: Gather 3–5 options
Search the exact model number. Include at least one large retailer, the brand's own store, and one or two independent or specialist shops. Specialists sometimes beat bigger stores on price, and often on service.
Step 3: Calculate the total cost
For each store, add up:
- Product price
- Shipping
- Import duties and taxes, if buying from abroad (see our customs guide)
- Payment fees or currency conversion charges
Step 4: Weigh the non-price factors
- Delivery time. Do you need it this week?
- Returns. Free returns can be worth a slightly higher price.
- Warranty. Especially important for electronics. See our electronics guide.
- Store trust. Use our legit store checklist.
Step 5: Check for real discounts
Before you pay, check for a newsletter welcome code or a current promotion. Our guide to coupon codes explains what actually works.
A simple comparison template
| Store | Price | Shipping | Taxes | Total | Delivery | Returns |
|---|
Copy this into a note or spreadsheet. Five minutes of comparison often saves more than any coupon.
The bottom line
Compare the total cost, not the sticker price, then let delivery, returns, and trust decide between close options.
